Telecom Subscribers To Pay 5% Tax On Calls, Text, Data - Phones .

By Nkechi Onyedika-Ugoeze, Abuja The Federal Government has disclosed that telecommunications subscribers would pay five per cent tax on calls, SMS and data services. Meanwhile, stakeholders in the industry have expressed dissatisfaction over government’s resolve to implement five per cent excise duty on all telecommunications services in Nigeria. Speaking in Abuja yesterday at the Stakeholders Consultative Forum on Implementation of Excise Duty, the Executive Secretary, Association of Telecommunications Companies of Nigeria (ATCON), Ajibola Olude, said taking cognizance of the hardship in Nigeria at a time like this, the government should rescind its decision to implement the five per cent excise duty on telecommunications operators. He said government should channel its resources to other sectors to diversify the economy. “What I am saying is that the proposed excise duty on all telecommunications companies is badly intended by the Ministry of Finance and National Planning and Nige

2023: Northern Christians rejected in totality the Muslim/ Ticket

AHEAD of 2023 general and Presidential elections, Northern Christians have rejected in totality the Muslim/ Ticket of the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC that has produced Asiwaju Bola Tinubu as the Presidential candidate and Senator Kashim Shettima as the running mate, describing the action as an agenda to economically and olitically marginalise Northern Christians. The decision which was taken Friday at Nicon Luxury Hotel, Abuja during the APC Northern Christians Leader Summit in conjunction with Christians from the north is a serious indication that Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu and his running mate Sen Shettima Kashim would face the herculean task convincing christains of northern extraction to vote for them in the 2023 poll. The Christian leaders have vowed that no Christian would vote for the present arrangement of the APC. Speaking as the Chairman of the event which has Christians drawn from the Nineteen Northern States, former Secretary to the government of the federation (S

Opinion: THE NOISE IS UNCALLED FOR:

I  can't fathom why  JA'IZ Bank's partnership with the Plateau State government on the rebuilding of  the Terminus Market has become such a hot debate. Why should that cause such a hype? Is it the name 'Ja'iz' or what? Why do we sometimes  deliberately choose to wallow in endless  stupidity even in the face of glaring facts? Who is better off when the market is eventually rebuilt? The Bank or Plateau and Plateau people?  This hate and foolish sentiments_which caused the burning of the market in the first place, are the reasons the State has remained desperately poor despite the potentials with which it is blessed. Ja'iz Bank is an interest-free Bank and has operated on that principle ever since_and thereby given  its customers fairer incentives compared to others. The fact that it is so-called and operates on Islamic banking principles doesn't make it a strictly Muslim affair. The Bank has customers and share-holders across board and has operated succe

Nigeria and The Road to 2023

By Muhammad Auwal Ibrahim I don't want to say that some Nigerians don't learn from their mistakes. But it seems that's just it. If not, by now we should have analysed our problem, agreed that it is a problem and mapped a way out ahead of time (not only because of the 2023 elections), before it is too late.  If only we are serious and ready for the change that we are clamouring for, by now, we should have faced the direction of where the sun is setting. We should have selected those who are capable and ready to lead us. Even if they are not eligible and suitable, we should have mentored them and made them to be the right choices/ones. But we only choose to do the 3Ws, herein referred to as "watch, wait and wail" at the end.  And my fear is that by the time we finish doing the 3Ws, we would realise that the situation has deteriorated and become worse than now. But I am afraid to say that we are not serious because both those who are clamouring for change and those

Your skill set is your new curriculum vitae

By Sadiq Sabo Imagine returning home after a hectic day at work and you are greeted with a leaking kitchen sink, a flooded basement and an oozing toilet. What would you do, call three different plumbers with expertise in kitchen sink, basement and toilet or call a plumber with a skill set of fixing a leaking kitchen sink, a flooded basement and an oozing toilet? I guess you would do the latter, just as every right thinking sapiens would do. That's what a skill set does! Skill set is defined as the collection of skills and abilities that can be applied to a professional or creative endeavour. Simply put: a skill set is the abilities you possess that equip you to carry out certain tasks. For example, your abilities to write well, think critically and work collaboratively as well as your relevant personal qualities, represent your soft-skills, an asset to any professional situation. Mastering one skill is great; becoming proficient is many skills is better and that's the gospel

Tinubu Blows up Atiku, Says He’s A Desperate Liar That Shouldn’t Be Entrusted With Presidency

Bola Ahmad Tinibu The presidential candidate of All Progressives Congress, APC, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, has described his counterpart in the opposition Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, and former vice president, Atiku Abubakar, as a desperate liar who should never be entrusted with the presidency. Tinubu spoke in reaction to an Arise TV interview aired on Friday, in which Atiku addressed a lot of issues, including a claim that he fell out with Tinubu in 2007 because he (Atiku) was opposed to a Muslim-Muslim presidential ticket. In response to a question on his thoughts on the Muslim-Muslim presidential ticket of the APC, Atiku said: “My fundamental disagreement with Asiwaju since 2007 was on the issue of Muslim-Muslim ticket. “That was my fundamental disagreement and departure from Asiwaju. “Together with Asiwaju, we formed ACN and I was given a ticket in Lagos he insisted to be my running mate and I said no, I am not going to have a Muslim-Muslim ticket.

Similarly, none of the state governors in the south-west region elected on the party’s platform, as well as the Speaker of the House of Representatives, was present as of the time the President arrived at the chamber. It is unclear why the meeting held, as well as why the APC flagbearer, speaker, and south-west governors were absent at the meeting. The meeting, on the other hand, was attended by the President of the Senate, Ahmad Lawan; Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Idris Wase; APC National Chairman, Abdullahi Adamu; and APC Vice-Presidential Candidate, Senator Kashim Shettima. He said the government needed to act because terrorists had moved from the conventional ways of funding their activities to mining and ransom taking.

Abia Poly Loses Accreditation Over Failure To Pay Staff Salaries For 30 Months

Abia State Polytechnic, Aba, has lost its accreditation from the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) for failing to pay staff salaries and allowances for over 30 months. In a statement issued on Tuesday, a spokesperson for NBTE, Fatima Abubakar, said the accreditation was withdrawn because the polytechnic had not shown any commitment to offset the arrears and ensure regular payment of salaries. “It is, therefore, with the utmost sense of responsibility that the board has decided to withdraw the accreditation status of the polytechnic to safeguard the quality assurance mechanism of the board,” Ms Abubakar said. The NBTE official said the governing council and management of the polytechnic made several failed promises to settle the backlog of salary arrears.
