Afenifere asks FG to append national census

The pan-Yoruba socio-political organisation, Afenifere, has asked the federal government to suspend the National Housing and Population Census scheduled to begin on May 3.The body requested this in a communiqué issued at the end of its monthly meeting held at the residence of its acting leader, Pa Ayo Adebanjo, in Isanya Ogbo, Ogun State. Afenifere in the communique signed by the Secretary General, Sola Ebiseni, and made available to journalist on Thursday, expressed concerns over the timing, adding that the N100 billion budget for the exercise is ‘scandalous and an economic offence’. The group recalled that it had earlier in a paper it presented at the National Consultative Forum on the 2023 Census held at the Banquet Hall, State House Abuja on August 11, 2022 argued that the census should not hold in the same year of a general election.   Jos, the capital city of Plateau State has been deeply divided since the unfortunate incident of September 7th, 2001 along religious lines. Since that ugly day, Muslims and Christians' alike have been living on either sides of the town. Matawalle reinstates suspended emir

  Governor Bello Mohammed Matawalle of Zamfara State has reinstated Alhaji Aliyu Garba Marafa as the Emir of Birnin Yandoto. Recall In July last year, Matawalle suspended the emir for conferring a chieftaincy title on a banditry kingpin, Ado Alieru. Amid controversy generated by the conferment, the emir had said Alieru was honoured based on the major role he played during a peace process arranged between the emirate and bandits who terrorised Tsafe LGA. The Secretary to the State Government, Kabiru Balarabe Sardauna, in a statement on Sunday announced the reinstatement of the emir. Sardauna said Marafa’s reinstatement was based “on the recommendations of a committee constituted to investigate all issues pertaining to the conferment of a traditional title to a repentant bandit, Ado Aleiru. ARI IS NOWHERE TO BE FOUND

INEC has said that it is unaware of the whereabouts of its Resident Electoral Commission (REC) in Adamawa State, Hudu Ari. Ari was the official who illegally declared Aishatu Dahiru of the All Progressives Congress (APC), the winner of the Adamawa State governorship election last Sunday. Both INEC and President Muhammadu Buhari have authorised Ari’s suspension from office and his investigation and possible prosecution by the police. INEC said Ari has not responded to calls made to his phone and flouted the directive to present himself to the headquarters on Monday. INEC spokesperson, Festus Okoye, disclosed this during a Friday interview with Channels Television. “Up till this moment, he has not reported and we don’t know his whereabouts,” Okoye said. “We don’t know where he is because, after this particular incident, the commission wrote him and also called him on the phone. FEC Approved 1.535 trillion.

 The Federal Executive Council has on Wednesday approved N1.535 trillion for the construction and rehabilitation of eleven roads across the country, under the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) Tax Credit Scheme. The Minister of Works and Housing, Babatunde Fashola, said the money would be spent on some major roads in Nigeria, totalling over 700km. This is coming barely 40 days to the end of President Muhammadu Buhari’s second term. Fashola said the roads, which would soon be completed, would link 11 states. He listed the benefiting states to include Edo, Delta, Kano, Kaduna, Borno and Adamawa among others. “The Council gave approval for the construction and rehabilitation of 11 roads totalling 737.242 kilometres in the sum of N1, 535, 154, 247, 234.48 under phase II of the NNPC tax credit scheme. “Recall that in January this year, the council approved a memo for the NNPC to invest N1.9 trillion on our roads. APC vice chair threatens Adamu with legal action over NEC meeting

  The National Vice Chairman (North West) of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), Salihu Mohammed Lukman has given the party’s national chairman, Abdullahi   Adamu one week to commence the process of convening the National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting. In an open letter addressed to Adamu and dated April 19, 2023, Lukman said the meeting should be convened to discuss critical issues affecting the party before the May 29 handover date. Recall that a foundation member of the APC, Rev. Alancha had on Tuesday, also called on Adamu to convene an emergency NEC meeting where zoning of the 10th National Assembly positions should be discussed and finalised. FG Declares Friday 21st & Monday 24th Eid-El Fitri Holidays

The Federal Government has declared Friday, April 21st and Monday, April 24th as public holidays for Muslims in the country to celebrate the end of Ramadan fasting. Minister of Interior, Rauf Aregbesola, made the declaration on behalf of the Federal Government, according to a statement by the Permanent Secretary of Ministry of Interior, Shuaib Belgore. The Minister wishes all Muslim faithful a happy celebration and asked them to imbibe the virtues of kindness, love, tolerance, peace, self-denial, and sacrifice. He added that the “deep spiritual consciousness” of the fasting period should not end but be maintained. Mr Aregbesola assures of government’s commitment to the provision of security for the life and property of every citizen and foreigner in the country while asking Nigerians to be part of the nation’s security architecture by being vigilant, noting that security is everybody’s responsibility.
