The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arrested a former Minister of Power, Sale Mamman, over alleged N22bn fraud. Mamman, who was arrested in the early hours of yesterday, was quizzed by the crack detectives of the EFCC at the commission’s headquarters in Abuja. He served as power minister from August 2019 to September 2021. Mamman and his agriculture and rural development counterpart, Sabo Nanono, were relieved of their cabinet positions on September 1, 2021 in what President Muhammadu Buhari reportedly said was to reinvigorate his cabinet and consolidate legacy achievements. Mamman’s arrest was said to be in connection with the EFCC’s on-going investigation into alleged corruption in the execution of some power projects. He was alleged to have conspired with staff of the ministry in charge of the accounts of the Zungeru and Mambilla Hydro Electric Power projects to divert N22 billion. Properties in Nigeria and abroad were said to have been linked to the suspects; with millions of naira and dollars recovered.
