Fear among Northerners in Owerri the Imo state capital heightened following the killing of eight Nigeriens by members of the Indigenous People of Biafra IPOB according to the police.
The attack occurred on Monday when the assailants attacked a building at Orogwe occupied by northerners and Nigeriens.
The northerners said the building was attacked because IPOB took all of them living in the area to be migrants from the North not knowing that the victims were foreigners.
An eyewitness Abubakar Muhammad said the gunmen had earlier visited the community on same Monday evening exchanging pleasantries with the people only to return with arms shooting eight to death and wounding others.
The Sarkin Hausawa of Imo state, Alh Auwal Baba Suleiman confirmed that the eight people killed were from Niger Republic saying they cut off the head of one of the victims and went away with it.
