OVER RECKONING OF STRIKE SUSPENSION LEADS SOME STUDENTS TO BE STRANDED

M.H.Anas (Reader)

Since February 14, 2022, the Nigerian  Federal universities and some State-owned  universities across the country were closed and shutdowned  of operations deliberately due to an industrial action declared by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), to press its demands on government which includes: payments of Earned Academic Allowances (EAA), revitalization fund, replacement of Integrated Personnel Payroll Information System (IPPIS), with the University Transparency and Accountability Solution ( UTAS), among others.

Inauspiciously, the strike which was  commenced as a warning strike, has been metamorphosed to an indefinite, which seems to be unending at the moment. Despite the fact that, a considerable number of meetings and consultations between FG and ASUU, negotiations were never on progress.

Furthermore, the hope and predictions of Nigerian students and other stakeholders  for the strike's suspension is at zero percent at

this moment because, ASUU recently reiterated it's 7 key demands as a condition by which must be executed and fulfil by FG for the strike to be suspended, which also seems to be unrealistic and far away from reality. On the side of the government, it's also insisting on the "no work, no pay policy", which compounded the entire process.

In addition on the side of the students, there  is a great milestone for students to go, as such, utilizing this auspicious time and prepare for self-actualization, self-reliance and self-esteem ahead of life challenges confronting the reality. Before and after graduation as a Nigerian student, you must endeavor to look for alternatives to survive favourably .

The habit of over expectations by some of my fellow colleagues at this excruciating time, has strictly leads many of them to become destitute and worried most atimes.  A lot of students are desperately waiting for the suspension of the strike action by ASUU, forgetting the fact that,  it is no longer fight for public universities alone as claimed, but it has turned to an inevitable war.

If Senior lecturers, PhD holders and Professors at the top line can redirect their minds and diversify into labour markets,  struggles to compete with others to earn a living at this point in time, then who does a student think he is, that would not engage himself or herself in labour markets and tussles for better atmosphere?

It's imperative for me to advice you as a fellow colleague of Nigerian public university, to wake up from the bloom dream you're into and face the reality by engaging yourself into entrepreneurial activities for you to acquire the necessary knowledge of business or hand work that will cater for your basic need. You've many hidden talents and skills that will uplift and upgrade you physically, structurally, financially and otherwise, evaluate them and grow.

In conclusion, starting late is far better than none. Explore all efforts and wipe up the shaded tears by establishing a business venture or acquiring a skill, work to ease the difficulties while the strike event is ongoing simultaneously.

Remember, the key to your success might just lie in the sensitivity of your big toe. So,be rational and seize any golden opportunity you have.

NIGERIANS LOSING INTEREST IN FIGHTING CORRUPTION – EFCC

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has lamented the loss of interest in the whistleblowing policy of the federal government despite the huge financial reward attached to it. The executive chairman of the commission, Abdullahi Bawa, revealed this yesterday during a one-day town hall meeting on strengthening the capacity of stakeholders on the whistleblowing policy held in Ilorin, the Kwara State capital. The programme with the theme, “The role of community based organisations in entrenching whistleblowing at the grassroots,” was in partnership with the African Centre for Media and Information Literacy (AFRICMIL) and supported by the MacArthur Foundation.  He said, “Two of the landmark recoveries from whistle-blowers’ information were the $9.8m recovered from a former managing director of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, Mr Andrew Yakubu, and the $11 million recovered at an apartment in Osborne Towers, Ikoyi, Lagos. “This seeming loss of interest...
